Adulting? Not at My Easter Egg Hunt

Where elbows were thrown and pride was shattered
By Verity Colquhoun

Think you’ve seen a competitive Easter egg hunt? You’ve seen nothing until you’ve met my in-laws.

The first time I met my mother-in-law was Easter. She had this gorgeous farm, and I was so nervous. She was one of those self-made matriarchs who’d built everything herself — the kind of woman who radiates strength and competence. At 25, I was completely intimidated. I remember thinking, Will I ever be like her?

So naturally, I turned up armed with all the classic daughter-in-law ammo: a fresh bouquet, clean jeans, and a smile that did not leave my face. I was ready to impress.

What I wasn’t ready for? The most ruthless Easter egg hunt of my life.

🎯 Survival of the Quickest

Picture this: we’re each handed a plastic shopping bag and herded to the bottom of a steep, grassy hill. My mother-in-law, reigning queen of chaos, stands at the top with hundreds of chocolate eggs in hand. With zero warning and one aggressive shout of “GO!” — she lets them fly.

Eggs tumble down the hill like sugary missiles. My fiancé, his three siblings, and all their partners go absolutely feral. I’m talking elbows out, full-contact scrambling, no mercy. The prize? Just a nod from the matriarch. But the stakes? Sky high.

By the end, my bag had been sliced open with a knife by my brother-in-law (yes, really). My jeans were grass-stained, my abs were sore from laughing, and despite having zero chance of winning as the newbie, I’d had the best time.

It’s still one of my all-time favourite Easter memories.
