What is an eSIM, and How It Differs from Other SIM Cards?

With everything taking a digital route, SIM cards now come in a digital form. SIM cards that do not have any physical entity are called eSIMs.

eSIM is a type of SIM card embedded into a mobile device's structure. It serves the same kind of function when compared to a physical SIM card. The eSIM comes pre-installed in new phones and has to be activated through an "eSIM profile."

What is an eSIM, and how do they Work?

If you own a device compatible with eSIM, you should know how it works. You only have to install an eSIM profile provided by SIM operators/carriers.

Most phones have both options, where you can use a physical SIM along with an eSIM. That means you can use your traditional SIM and add a second SIM as an eSIM.

The eSIM has the same working methodology as the NFC chip. The NFC chip is used by payment techs like Google Pay and Apple Pay.

What are the Advantages of Using an eSIM?

One of the best things about eSIMs is eliminating the logistical hassle while getting a physical SIM card.

Another great advantage of using an eSIM is that the data can be rewritten. You can easily change your service provider and add new data plans within minutes.

eSIMs are an excellent option for frequent travelers. You get the liberty to stay connected to your loved ones anywhere, anytime.

What are the Disadvantages of Using an eSIM?

eSIMs have a disadvantage in terms of consumer usage. Not all phones come with an in-built eSIM. Also, changing the network through eSIMs can't be done until you contact your network.

How does an eSIM Help Devices?

eSIM eliminates the need for an additional tray that helps to manufacture smaller devices that look more compact. eSIMs also have the potential to connect devices like laptops and tablets.

How do eSIMs Work in Practice?

If your phone has both options, i.e., an eSIM and a physical SIM, the home screen will display both options simultaneously.

Users can use both options simultaneously. They will be able to receive texts and calls from both networks. However, users have the option to make a default line where they can make calls or texts on.

eSIM vs. Physical SIM: What to Use?

eSIMs can be integrated within the phone device, which helps to leave additional space for other components, such as the battery.

eSIMs cannot be lost or damaged, which is why it is a secure option since no duplication can happen. It is also easier to locate, unlike a physical SIM.

However, there are still limitations to this new and evolving technology. eSIM is only available in a handful of mobile sets, making it not a feasible option for most consumers. It is also not easy to transfer the data from the eSIM to another phone since you'll have to download everything from the cloud storage.
